Pernilla Zetterman
Pernilla Zetterman is a modern photographer. The
photographer grew up in Sweden and went to the Aalto University school of arts.
She grew up and currently resides in Sweden. She takes pictures of normal
objects or people from different angles. The book that I checked out has a
series of photos in it that focus on everyday objects and or things that go
unseen by the eye and by framing it properly she makes the subject pop. One
photo that really intrigues me was an extension cord bundled up on a clean
white reflective wall/ground. The object was bundled up in a nice thread almost
like how an envelope would be with a thread of string. The extension cord by
itself would have been a really boring picture but the photographer did an
excellent job adding little things to make this photo pleasing. She has many
other photos in the book that use the same technique and adds a really nice
theme to her style. She also focuses heavily on textures and macro pictures. I
think she really wants to stress on how many things go unseen but are really
beautiful in nature if brought to light. Her photos have a very nice
comforting, clean, light, and enjoying look to all of her photos. I really
enjoy how simple these photos are, just clean lighting and little to no other
objects in the frame.
Diego Uchitel
Diego grew up in Buenos Aires. He then went to UCLA and
enrolled in the film school. He started from humble beginnings, taking pictures
at K Mart and working his way up the ladder and finally taking pictures for
fashion magazines. He was impacted by the way families would line up at K mart
for hours trying to get a family portrait. It was heartbreaking to him and
because of that experience he dived into taking pictures of people. The subject
matter that he focuses on is people. His style is very much like a polaroid. The
book title is named “Polaroid,” and it became clear as to why it is called
that. All of his photos are black and white and does an excellent job catching
people with non-expression. The lighting is very dark and dramatic and he uses
film to photograph. The symmetry, blurred background and even intentionality
with all of the objects around the subject in his photos is what makes these
photos so nice to look at. Not much natural light and if there is it is
diffused really well to create a softer light. He places the subject sometimes
at different parts of the frame, a lot of unique angles and placement is what
makes this photographer unique from the rest.
Erwin Olaf
Erwin Olaf is a Dutch photographer born in the Netherlands.
His photos are very unique and very interesting to look at. The even diffused
lighting is very soft and makes each photograph nicer to look a it. Unlike
other photographers who use a lot of dramatic lighting and different poses for
their subjects, Erwin Olaf uses expressionless yet perfect photojournalistic
lighting. He photographs people and only people. Each of his shots are
purposeful and he does not do anything “extra” besides trying to make it as set
up and forced as possible. Sometimes his photos make you think there is a
story, an unsaid story behind every photo. His specific photographic style includes,
staged even lighting, very clean and nothing extra in his photos, a business
headshot sort of feel but no one ever looking into the camera. Every single one
of these pictures makes it look like the subject is in deep thought about
something. That extra creativity with how the subject always come off of how
they are in deep though makes these images theirs. The technical aspect of each
photograph from the lighting, the subject positioning and their expressions are
very unique. Erwin Olaf does an excellent job using this style and telling a story
behind each photograph.
